Overcoming Barriers to Student Participation in Online Discussions

Abstract

In this paper, we analyze the issues we encountered in trying to build a community of practice amongst our students through engaging in online dialogue using WebCT. The analysis is guided by an educational change framework, proposed by Goodell, Parker and Kahle (submitted), which includes Technical, Political, Cultural, Moral and Personal dimensions. First, the analysis highlights the reasons we chose to use WebCT. Second, we will discuss the issues we have faced in using WebCT effectively. Finally, we conclude by offering suggestions for instructors using WebCT the first time.
