[[abstract]]Abstract China is a society that uses filial piety as its cultural nucleus The concept of filial piety not only regulates the behaviors of the Chinese it also regulates the direction of the politics Although filial piety is not a religion however it has the same function and values Therefore its importance sometimes even surpasses religion Shun was one of China’s enlightened emperor he was also a typical example of a dutiful son His stories of how he attended his unruly parents were recorded in Chinese classic folklores which has been continuously modified and passed on through out generations Therefore his tale can best illustrate the tradition; relationship between Chinese parents and their children This research is base on classic Shun folklores using them to reflect Chinese pietistic culture and provide another angle of interpretation as well as exploring the blend of the three religious ideologies(Confucianism Buddhism and Taoism)in pietistic culture This thesis is divided into five chapters The first chapter is the introduction The second chapter contrasts the modification to Shun’s tale in classic literatures and traditional folklores The third chapter describes how Shun’s tale reflects filial pietistic morals The fourth chapter will explore people’s folk belief and the blend of the three major religious ideologies (Confucianism Buddhism and Taoism) The final chapter the conclusion will try to derive the essence of filial piety and love base on Shun’s tale which reveals pietistic morality and ideology Hopefully the passing of filial piety from generation to generation will exhibit the values of human existence
