Scholars over the years have touched on the overview of Chinese-medium schools created by the Christian churches, but they tend to group these schools with the “traditional” ones that are not supported by the churches. Though created and supported during the pre-independence days in Singapore and Malaysia by non-governmental organisations, there are distinct differences between these so-called “missionary Chinese-medium schools”, such as Catholic High School, and the “traditional” Chinese-medium schools in terms of school management and teaching. As such, these two types of schools must not be grouped together. Historical evidences have shown that the missionary Chinese-medium schools are created on the basis of Chinese-medium schools and dominantly English-speaking Christian schools. With a long history of nearly 80 years and holding onto the teaching ideology of focusing students to become bilingual with Chinese and English, Catholic High School has produced some of the well-known personalities in the entertainment and the political arenas in Singapore. Study has shown that Catholic High has drawn on quintessence from both the Christian schools and the Chinese-medium schools, thus it cannot simply, together with other missionary Chinese-medium schools that run on the similar model, be placed together with the “traditional” schools as a homogenous group.
