Abstract
This dissertation focuses on contemporary literature produced by Arab American women authors. My study utilizes the works of Diana Abu-Jaber, Mohja Kahf, Suheir Hammad, Naomi Shihab Nye, and Laila Halaby, to raise questions about the processes, methods, and practices of writing, publishing, and reading Arab American women’s literature. Influenced by developments in contemporary Arab American studies, postcolonial, and reception theories, this dissertation examines, from an interdisciplinary perspective, novels, poetry, prose, and online articles that these authors produced in the aftermath of the First Gulf War until today (1993-2007). A study of this literature, I argue, facilitates a more comprehensive understanding of the history of Arab American literature, its recent trends, and possible futures. Chapter Two focuses on the work of Diana Abu-Jaber, one of the most important Arab American women authors today. Tracing literary developments, shifts, and alterations in the author’s work, I argue that Abu-Jaber uses her writing to humanize Arab Americans for her predominantly western audiences. Focusing on what I see as shifts in the author’s political commitments and ideals, I analyze her large body of works in order to understand how they are influenced by the western publication industry, marketing strategies, reader demand, and literary fame. Chapter Three deals explicitly with the works of Mohja Kahf as I examine the author’s attempt to reconfigure Islam’s negative status in the United States by defying the politics of literary representation and challenging the restrictive cultural, racial, and religious boundaries of the Muslim ummah or community. I argue that the author’s work challenges both the mythologies of representations surrounding the figure of the Muslim woman in the West and the gendered and sometimes exclusionary parameters of the Muslim ummah in the United States. In Chapter Four, I shift my focus to the writings of Naomi Shihab Nye, Suheir Hammad, and Laila Halaby. I examine how these authors negotiate the national trauma of September 11, 2001 and state of emergency ensuing in the wake of the attacks. I assess how these authors render legible Arab American and Muslim American encounters of 9/11 and its aftermath.

    Regards croisés sur l’immigration marocaine en Italie

    Cet article est une étude du premier roman de Younis Tawfik, poète et écrivain d’origine iraquienne, installé depuis plusieurs décennies à Turin, où il a vu arriver et s’installer différents flux de population étrangère, notamment marocaine. La straniera (1999) met en scène la lutte pour la vie et la dignité d’une jeune femme marocaine fraîchement arrivée en Italie, et les interrogations du protagoniste masculin, immigré de longue date et parfaitement intégré, que la rencontre avec la jeune femme renvoie à son passé et à son statut d’étranger. L’article met en lumière la dimension didactique du roman, qui, à sa façon, explique l’« Orient » aux Italiens, analyse les croisements qui s’opèrent entre deux parcours immigrés et examine les modalités qui, selon l’auteur, viennent définir le dialogue interculturel.<br>Quest’articolo studia il primo romanzo di Younis Tawfik, poeta e scrittore di origine irachena stabilitosi da tre decenni a Torino, dove ha visto arrivare e sistemarsi diversi flussi di popolazione straniera, fra cui quella marocchina. La straniera (1999) mette in scena la lotta per la vita e per la dignità di una donna marocchina, appena arrivata in Italia, e le interrogazioni del protagonista maschile, immigrato da tempo e ben integrato, che l’incontro con la donna rinvia al suo passato e al suo essere straniero. L’articolo mette in luce la dimensione didattica del romanzo, che spiega l’« Oriente » agli Italiani, analizza gli incroci che avvengono tra due percorsi migratori e esamina le modalità che, secondo l’autore, definiscono il dialogo interculturale.

    Des saints pour la fiction, des saints face à l’Histoire

    Pourquoi des écrivains non confessionnels (Joseph Delteil, Blaise Cendrars, Christian Bobin, Sylvie Germain, Claude Louis-Combet) ont-ils choisi de réécrire des vies de saints au XXe siècle ? Le parti pris est surprenant à plusieurs titres. L’hagiographie est un genre historique et religieux, terrain a priori réservé aux historiens, aux ecclésiastiques ou aux écrivains catholiques. De plus, à la fin du siècle, l’hagiographie est sortie du champ littéraire avec la disparition du groupe des écrivains catholiques. Curieusement, nos auteurs vont s’inscrire dans ces décalages non seulement pour définir leur place par rapport à l’hagiographe traditionnel mais aussi pour s’approprier le genre. Amorces fictionnelles et objets de rêveries poétiques, les vies de saints sont soumises à la fantaisie littéraire de ces auteurs au statut improbable. Dans un dialogue avec les sources allant du jeu à la contestation, les écrivains utilisent l’intertexte hagiographique, et notamment son système narratif, pour s’évader dans le merveilleux mais encore pour penser leur époque. En effet, si éloignée de la réalité contemporaine soit-elle en apparence, l’hagiographie joue à la fois un rôle de contrepoint et de reflet du présent. La confrontation avec ces récits surgis du passé permet alors aux auteurs de repenser la marche de l’Histoire et l’inscription de l’Homme dans le temps.

    Regards de femmes: l’Andalousie du XIXe siècle au «féminin francophone»

    Women have a specific place in the list of French-speaking travellers who take Andalucía as their favourite destination. A dream place or a place full of local colour, far off orientalism deeply rooted in the French-speaking imagery, passed on by the «maîtres en écriture», the Southern lands of the Bética region became the subject of a literary discourse which made up a canonic representation of the Muslim past, always longed for. From the work of the Belgian Juliette de Robersart, filtered by personal contributions in her traditional traveller style, to Maria Star´s cosmopolitan approach, through the French Marie Noémi Cadiot, a hurried tourist who followed the topics of genre, or the Swiss Mme de Gasparin, influenced by the Arabic-Andalou¬sian myth, these fearless women fit into a common desire of otherness and «dépaysement».
