AbstractA membership certificate for the New England Female Moral Society. Above the text of the certificate is an elaborate illustration of the New Testament story of Jesus Christ's encounter with Mary Magdalene at the water well. Printed under the image: " 'His disciples marvelled that he talked with the Woman.' John 4th Chap. 27th v." Text of certificate reads: New England Female Moral Reform Society. / This certifies that Mrs. Sarah H. Sheldon is a Life Member / of the / New England Female Moral Reform Society. / Organized October 3d 1836 Incoroporated March, 25th 1846 / Boston January 1860 / Roxana Howe Secretary Catherine S. Kilton President. The constitution of the New England Female Moral Reform Society stated that it's mission was the "prevention of licentiouness" and to protect young women from the "unprincipled destroyer [who] seduce and ruin the unsuspecting." Date based on the range of years that the lithographic partnership was in existence. Lithograph has tan tinted background. Gift of David Doret, September 2004. #2004.28.
