Translations by western missionaries were the main sources of Western Learning (Xi Xue) for Chinese intellectuals from 1860 till the end of 19th. Those Missionaries came to China since mid 19th century had done their translating jobs in a same way as their precursors in 17th. That was a certain corporation between western missionaries and their native assistants. Indigenous intellectuals expressed what missionaries had orally interpreted about the original books in very decent classical literal language what sometime was “rewriting”. The final translations thus had been transferred by two steps first of which was the interpretation of missionaries who were not experts in related fields. The second was the re-expressing by native intellectuals who were not quite familiar with western language or knowledge. Texts from those multitransferred translations thus could be a good case to study the complicated cultural interaction between Western learning and indigenous knowledge traditions during that period. The ZuoZhi Chuyan translated and published by Jiangnan Arsenal at the 80s’ of 19th is such a typical work. This book was interpreted by John Fryer and literal expressed by Ying Zuxi. It had become the most important knowledge sources of Chinese intellectuals on western political when primal published on 1885. This paper try to do textual research on Zuzhi Chuyan and it’s original Political Economy, for use in schools, and for private instruction Edited and published by W. and R. Chamber in Edingurge on 1852 basing on the documentary research about their historical background. By comparing with its colloquial version and several other translations in East Asia, we will find the inclination of missionaries’ translation strategy had deeply impacted the modern knowledge in East Asia at the very beginning periods.セッション3 文化交渉と媒体による言語伝播―翻訳、ツール、教育― 翻訳:氷野 歩
