Abstract
This article analyses the history of the women’s organisations that have marked the first half of the twentieth century in Cuba and have transformed people’s mindset. The major figures of Cuban women struggle to get an economic, political and legal statute favouring their co-sisters and to extend voting rights to all Cuban women. The promulgation of the 1940 Constitution, a beacon of progressive ideas, represents a crucial turning point that paves the way for later changes. In 1946, the creation of the Democratic Federation of Cuban Women was a major breakthrough if compared to previous movements.
