A Missão Médica Especial brasileira de caráter militar na Primeira Guerra Mundial

Abstract

In World War I, Brazil, after the Declaration of war on the German Empire and pursuant to commitments in the Inter-allied Conference, which took place in Paris in 1917, sent to France in 16 August 1918 a Special Medical Mission with military character. The mission was created in order to maintain a temporary hospital in the war zone to help the allied health services. This article intends to present historical data concerning the causes that led Brazil to send this mission, its organization, logistical details relating to its deployment to the Operations Theater and the hospital settlement on French soil. Particular attention is given to the impact of the Spanish flu in the mission, the results achieved by the project and the closure of the mission and the hospital.
