  • Blue Ethics : Ethical Perspectives on Sustainable, Fair Water Resources Use and Management

    Girardin, Benoît; Fiechter-Widemann, Evelyne (Globethics.net, 2019)
For many policy makers, urban managers, water experts, technicians or activists, ethical perspectives in water management are not important or do not bring any added value. A debate seems to be locked between those stressing mainly the right of access to water for all and those who cannot go beyond economic realism. The sustainable use of a resource that becomes under growing pressure, in terms of extraction, allocation and recycling looks as a technical issue, not to say a technocratic one. This collective book claims the opposite. The many issues faced by the access to water as well as the sustainable use of the resource rely on open negotiations, settling conflicts, tariffs structure while expanding delivery and managing fairly water' scarcity in all these processes, ethical values do matter.

  • MyLeadership IV

    Stückelberger, Christoph (Globethics.net, 2014)
Codes of conduct are voluntary agreements with the aim of committing a person or an organisation to respect certain values and rules. They can be developed and implemented by a person or an organisation or existing codes can be signed by people and organisations. Therefore, they have the advantage of being developed and implemented in a fast way. They have the disadvantage of not being as binding as laws with their sanction mechanisms. Therefore, the credibility of each code of conduct depends on serious monitoring by the signing parties. Without it, it remains a nice piece of paper, for superficial window dressing. In this case it does not increase credibility but rather suspicion against those who sign a code.

    Stückelberger, Christoph (Globethics.net, 2019)
How can I live out my values and convictions in everyday life? How can I reconcile faith and action? How can we encourage one another in what we do instead of giving up to resignation? Such questions are at the centre of these 365 short texts, written out of and for everyday life: way-markers offering a sense of direction and encouragement. These aphorisms and reflections are centred around seven themes: 1. Creation, the senses and environment; 2. Good and evil, virtue and vice; 3. Life, energy and being human; 4. Poverty, wealth and justice; 5. Relationships, love and sexuality; 6. Economics, technology, globalisation, media; 7. Politics, globalisation, law, nationalism; 8. Spirituality, faith, knowledge, 9. Churches and religions.
  • Day After Day

    Brenifier, Oscar (Globethics.net, 2019)
One can philosophize through lengthy explanations and towering treaties. But there is another tradition: that of the aphorism, the art of the fragment. To make the reader think through one or a few brief sentences, a digest of thought that tries to capture in few words a vivid problematic, in a striking form. Often critical, ironic or mocking, this laconic form of philosophical expression is generous because it is trusting: the reader will understand mere implicit meaning; he will read between the lines. And when will be highlighted the sordid of the human soul, he will not be sad but joyful, for consciousness makes us free. The issue is to reconcile with our own finitude, to accept our own humanity, for better and for worse. The 356 aphorisms featured in these pages demand of the reader the above mentioned disciplined thought and reflection
  • African Church Assets Handbook

Stückelberger, Christoph; Ogara, William Otiende; Mawudor, Bright (Globethics.net, 2018)
Churches in Africa have vast assets: agricultural land and prime land in cities, real estate in schools, universities, hospitals, churches etc. How can these institutions become less dependent on donations by increasing revenue from these assets? Theological visions, ethical values, planning skills, integrity leadership, fair elections, professional governing structures, anti-corruption mechanisms, innovative strategies and investment partnerships are needed to aid such developments. This handbook offers conceptual knowledge, practical solutions and case studies, written by practitioners for practitioners in churches: pastors/priests, leaders, finance officers, asset managers, donor agencies, students and all those engaged for professional, innovative, efficient and faith-based asset management of churches and church-related organisations.

  • Essential Approaches to Christian Religious Education

    Byaruhanga, Christopher (Globethics.net, 2018)
Teaching Christian religious education at the lower secondary school level is complex. It involves the interweaving of content knowledge, pedagogical skills, a knowledge and appreciation of the multifaceted nature of students and finally the evaluation skills that help the teacher to arrive at the conclusion that the intended key learning outcomes have been achieved. Personal characteristics too are integral in the overall portrait of a professional Christian religious education teacher, especially for those people who believe that today there is the paradigm shift between providing instruction and producing learning between imparting knowledge and facilitating learning. An examination of the available literature reveals that many books have been written about how religion should be taught in schools. This book is not about any particular religion; it addresses the deficiency of materials related directly to the essential approaches that should be employed when teaching Christian religious education at the lower secondary school level in Uganda.
  • Pleure, Ô Noir, frère bien-aimé

    Kanefu, Rodrigue Buchakuzi (Globethics.net, 2015)
"Le présent livre rassemble des textes essentiels de Patrice-Émery Lumumba, Premier Ministre du premier gouvernement de la RD Congo après l’indépendance, assassiné après sept mois en fonction. L’anthologie est destinée à l’éducation politique et humaine de la jeunesse pour les valeurs de la liberté, de la justice, du courage, de l’intégrité et des droits de l’homme en RDC comme dans le monde. Patrice-Émery Lumumba est un levier pour rêver d’une nouvelle destinée pour le Congo." "Who is Lumumba and what did he do? Patrice-Émery Lumumba is known by a large number of Congolese people as a leader who has struggled, namely for the independence of the Republic of Congo, and for the emancipation of Africa. He was the first democratically elected Prime Minister after the DR Congo became an independent country. He delivered a historical speech 30th June, 1960 during the Independence Day celebration ceremony. Lumumba was first a post office worker and then later became a pol-itician. During his lifetime he worked as a press correspondent, an es-sayist, a poet and finally a letter writer (epistolizer). In fact, Lumumba’s multifarious occupations were little known among the Congolese people who knew him only as an African leader. Through this anthology, we would like to present the writings and orations of Lumumba that showcase his excellent literary ability, with which he has communicated to humanity as a press correspondent, an essayist, a poet, a political speaker with a volcanic eloquence (and not always with the expected diplomatic language and attitude) and an epis-tolizer. We would like to share with you his vision which is visible in his literature as a writer and through his speeches. Finally, with this anthology, we would like to understand Lumumba as the excellent Pan-African leader for human rights, human dignity and a promoter of human freedom – human “Uhuru”."
  • In the Shadows of Truth

    Kansiime, Elly K . (Globethics.net, 2017)
In this book the author deals with the hidden realities posed by parents who spend much of their time occupied with work and leisure, while the children are left to their to their own devices. In the course of these long time period of separation, children build inappropriate relationships and indulge in detrimental practices that pose both short- and long-terms effects to themselves and the family at large. This book therefore focuses on parental ethical roles in the Uganda African context. It is a very moving family ethical exposition that will build up parents and help them to rethink their approach to family practises. It is a book intended to raise awareness of the subtle dangers that unintentional neglect can cause, potentially damaging their families and their children’s future.
