Abstract
For much of the twentieth century it was widely assumed that only one sort or type of philosophy was needed. In this paper I argue that different sorts of philosophy may be required against the teleology that insists upon a comprehensive philosophy, and place special emphasis on the importance of formative philosophy. Second, I show Nietzsche to be a thinker of precisely this kind of philosophy whereby metaphilosophical perspectives allow him to develop a distinctly formational philosophia. Hence in the first section an account of formative philosophy is given while in the second section a discussion of Nietzsche will illustrate the reasons why Nietzsche is a formative philosopher.Date
