What can Philosophy and Science tell about “Apocalypse”? The former seems to show a nihilistic power, while the latter uses a descriptive power, thus avoiding any religious or mystic impulse. The outcome, anyway, looks like a vade mecum. In any case, all “apocalyptic nouns” range between Prophecy and Foresight, Presage and Oracle, Superstition and Faith, Archetype and Destiny, Unconscious and Power, Messianism and Nowhere, Remorse and Day After, Society Game and Ceremony.Date

Sexuated Topology and the Suspension of Meaning: A Non-Hermeneutical Phenomenological Approach to Textual AnalysisBailey, Steven (2014-07-31)This study assumes the subject's pursuit of meaning is generally incapacitating and should be suspended. It aims to demonstrate how such a suspension is theoretically accomplished by utilizing Lacan's formulae of sexuation integrated with his work in discourse theory and topology. Part I places this study into context by examining scholarship from the established fields of hermeneutics, phenomenology, (post)structuralism, aesthetic theory and psychoanalysis in order to extract out their respective theory of meaning. These theories reveal that an historical struggle with meaning has been underway since the Reformation and reaches near crisis proportions in the 20th century. On the one hand this crisis is mollified by the rise of Heideggerian-Gadamerian hermeneutical phenomenology which questions traditional epistemological approaches to the text using a new ontological conceptualization of meaning and a conscious rejection of methodology. On the other hand this crisis is exacerbated when the ubiquitous nature of meaning is itself challenged by (post)structuralism's discovery of the signifier which inscribes a limit to meaning, and by the domains of sense and nonsense newly opened up by aesthetic theory. These historical developments culminate in the field of psychoanalysis which most consequentially delimits a cause of meaning said to be closely linked to the core of subjectivity. Part II extends these findings by rigorously constructing out of the Lacanian sexuated formulae a decidedly non-hermeneutical phenomenological approach useful in demonstrating the sexual nature of meaning. Explicated in their static state by way of an account of their original derivation from the Aristotelian logical square, it is argued that these four formulae are relevant to basic concerns of textual theory inclusive of the hermeneutical circle of meaning. These formulae are then set into motion by integrating them with Lacan's four discourses to demonstrate the breakdown of meaning. Finally, the cuts and sutures of two-dimensional space that is topology as set down in L'étourdit are performed to confirm how the very field of meaning is ultimately suspended from a nonsensical singular point known in Lacanian psychoanalysis as objet a. The contention is that by occupying this point the subject frees himself from the debilitating grip of meaning.

Radical Social Ecology as Deep Pragmatism: A Call to the Abolition of Systemic Dissonance and the Minimization of Entropic ChaosBrender, Arielle (DigitalResearch@Fordham, 2018-05-19)This paper aims to shed light on the dissonance caused by the superimposition of Dominant Human Systems on Natural Systems. I highlight the synthetic nature of Dominant Human Systems as egoic and linguistic phenomenon manufactured by a mere portion of the human population, which renders them inherently oppressive unto peoples and landscapes whose wisdom were barred from the design process. In pursuing a radical pragmatic approach to mending the simultaneous oppression and destruction of the human being and the earth, I highlight the necessity of minimizing entropic chaos caused by excess energy expenditure, an essential feature of systems that aim to run counter to the natural flow of the Cosmos. In Chapter 1, I discuss the pragmatism of systemic biomimicry and the tenets of ecology which must be assumed for the construction of effective human systems. In Chapter 2, the notion of construct is explored through the lense of metaphysical grounding. In Chapter 3, I explicate the dominant human systems [of oppression] which attempt to govern our human world and their discongruence with Natural Systems. In Chapter 4, tools for dismantling and reconstructing our sloppily-designed systems from a pluralistic base are explored. Chapter 5 focuses on the role of the individual in regard to the conscious evolution of the whole. Chapter 6 concludes with mention of the absurdity in the mainstream notion of ‘sustainability,’ and the pragmatism of hope. The radical pragmatism pursued in this work aims at a qualitative shift in society moreso than a quantitative one.

<i>Entre Casandra y Clío:</i> A propósito del pasado, el presente y el futuro de la filosofía de la historiaMoro Abadía, Óscar (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas - Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, 2006-12-01)Taking the publication of the second edition of Concha Roldan’s <i>Entre Casandra y Clío</i> as reference, this article analyses the philosophy of history from the perspectives of the past, the present and the future. First, the paper examines the current disciplinary crisis in an effort to define the philosophy of history at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Second, the article considers the historical dimension of the debated scientific nature of historical knowledge and includes the current implications of this controversy. Third, the essay explores the ways in which the philosophy of history can play an ethical function.<br><br>Tomando como referencia la publicación de la segunda edición del libro de Concha Roldán <i>Entre Casandra y Clío</i>, el presente artículo examina algunas cuestiones relacionadas con el pasado, el presente y el futuro de la filosofía de la historia. En primer lugar, se analiza la crisis actual que atraviesa la disciplina tratando de determinar cuál puede ser el sentido de la filosofía de la historia en el comienzo del siglo XXI. En segundo lugar, se pasa revista al debate a propósito del carácter científico del conocimiento histórico y se examinan sus implicaciones en la actualidad. En tercer lugar, se intenta determinar la función ética que puede desempeñar la filosofía de la historia.
