AbstractArticle discusses the works by Jonas Mikelinskas, general principles of his creation and his potential artistic expression possibilities, reveals innovative character of his prose. Creation by J. Mikelinskas is described as unique phenomenon in Lithuania, since the writer never followed the trends dictated by the time, always aspired for freedom of an individual and creation. Writer's biography is introduced, events and people who influenced formation of J. Mikelinskas as a writer are described. The article contains analysis of the novels: „Nepagirtas tarp moterų“ [Unpraised among Women], „Nors nešvietė laimėjimo viltis“ [Though no Hope of Victory Was Shining], „Genys yra margas“ [Woodpecker is Spotted], „Čia ir dabar“ [Now and Here], etc., short story „Anonimas“ [Anonym], stories. The key principles of J. Mikelinskas' creation are highlighted, the most important of which in the author's opinion is the belief that aesthetics cannot exist without ethics, noting that J. Mikelinskas often refers to I. Kant's categorical imperative in his works to the extent that ethics in some of his works wins over aesthetics. It happens when the problems of the dictate of circumstances and free choice, issues of honesty, responsibility come to the first place in the writer's novels, when the freedom of choice is discussed, challenging the destiny and circumstances. Existential elements of the writer's works are highlighted, stating that a human being is doomed to freedom, psychoanalysis motives, when discussing the problems of subconsciousness. Writer’s style is discussed. Conclusion is drawn that J. Mikelinskas did not follow the soviet rules of writing, while the central aesthetic principle coincided with the ethical principle, i.e. loyalty to one's moral principles.
