Abstract
Literature is a body written works that use words to develop the imagination and challenge the reader with a unique perspective of life A work of literature is a creative, interesting, and such a universal form of expression like; emotion, spiritual, or intellectual concerns of humanity. It makes literature become interesting to be a subject. As one of literary works, film may used as an interesting object of study too. Film entertains the audiences because it contains many aspects that are enjoyable for the audience. It brings up the audience to the emotions of the characters and in the end they can take the moral lesson to be applied in the daily life. Those are the reason why analyze literary, especially film, is proper for researcher’s thesis. This study focuses on escaping from broken heart done by Amanda Woods from The United States to England in Nancy Meyers’s film “The Holiday”. There are two statements of problem in this analysis. Those are: (1) what are the problems faced by Amanda Woods related to the reasons she escaped from the broken heart? (2) How did Amanda Woods cope with her problems in England? This analysis uses descriptive qualitative research design because it finds out the escaping from broken heart done by Amanda Woods from The United States to England in Nancy Meyers’s film “The Holiday”. Thus, objective approach is used in this study because the researcher analyzes escaping from broken heart done by Amanda Woods from The United States to England then finds and proves the finding which was presented in the film by the director. The finding of the analysis shows that Amanda Woods have three problems related to the reasons she escaped from broken heart. They are; (1) Amanda’s feeling of shame, (2) feeling of stress, and 3) feeling of loneliness. The other findings are about Amanda’s ways to cope with her problems in England. They are; (1) Fighting against the shame, (2) Avoiding the stress, and (3) Vanishing the loneliness.Date
