Abstract
Verisimilitude and dissonance: a breach of contract? A critical essay on the Enlightenment’s associational conception of language We try and examine eighteenth-century treatises on rhetoric and belleslettres in order to define the notions of verisimilitude and perspicuity negatively. Dissonance is interpreted according to moral terms. This moral impact has to be explained by the associational and empiricist conception of language of the time. Finally, these ethics of tropes will be compared to more modern reflections on the uses and abuses of figures of speech.
