Abstract
PROBLEMS AND PRACTICES OF DOMICILIARY CARERS IN THE FACE OF FAMILY CARERS: A PARADOX Little is known of how social service domiciliary carers perceive family carers and the care and treatment they supply. Neither do we know in what way they regard such helpers nor why. Analysis reveals that they are conscious of the instrumental and clinical work carried out by family carers but disregard the family or marital relationship linking patients to carers. They expect carers to assume the role of auxiliary nurses. They consider that families are primarily responsible for care and treatment, even professional. The public services thus play a secondary role in which the domicialiary carers are there to train family carers to offer care and treatment, rallying families, giving them moral support and standing in for them when necessary.
