Abstract
Should one try and find some principle of ethics, i.e. something that would be herein, within us, so that it may be liable to exist ? Do not ethics also come from outside, i.e. from a social constraint ? The protagonists of Alciphron’s third part start an acute debate on the topic. However attention is turned from the « good » towards the beautiful which is the object of the moral sense. This thesis and objections made to it are the lever enabling to grasp the part played by interest, by our feelings both of fear and of hope and by obedience to the divine law. What is at stake is the liability of autonomous ethics.
