Abstract
The way in which patients are treated in the last moments of their lives determines the manner, place ant time of their deaths, and affects the viability of their organs for a possible transplant. Such a tight link between the end of life and organ donation means, on the one hand, that decisions on maintenance or withdrawal of life support may be more or less conductive to organ donation. On the other hand, the envisioned possibility of a proximate organ donation can affect the way patients who are likely to die and could become organ donors are handled and taken care of. The optimal care of a patient may not be compatible with the optimal preservation of his organs, and vice versa. This is why, when an individual is simultaneously a patient and a potential organ donor, professionals who deal with him are faced with difficult moral dilemmas and delicate conflicts of interests. This article describes and discusses the ethical tensions that arise when it is unclear whether the priority of a professional is to serve the welfare of a patient or promote organ donation.
