AbstractKnowledge generated in a region is normally recorded in the local scripts and these records form a major source for study of the region. These records may contain valuable information like indigenous medicine, agriculture, etc which will be highly relevant for the sustainable development. ICT can be harnessed to collect and conserve these records and retrieve information from them. ICT can also empower and emancipate the backward people if their vital information needs can be met by it through their own language and script. But in India information infrastructures have disregarded information part; especially content in local language. One of the causes for this is lack of availability of relevant language technology. But now Unicode and related developments enable reviving original scripts for use in ICT based systems. The paper discusses essential information systems to be developed in local scripts like those on indigenous knowledge. Opines that development of local language technology with provision for use of OCR, spell check etc for original script is to be considered a priority area in ICT development.
