Abstract
The washing and sterilization rooms are considered areas of technical support and health-care facilities, therefore, they must be constructed, expanded or improved to meet its basic function as to provide clean material, decontaminated, ensuring inactivation of pathogenic microorganisms. It was held at the Instituto Oswaldo Cruz a scheme designed to adapt washing and sterilization rooms, to structure them according to the technical guidance of the Ministry of Health, focusing on primary and secondary containment which aim to reduce exposure the risk agents. Implementing the project covered three stages: physical facilities; purchase of equipments and materials required for the project, and training of professionals to became familiar with the equipment, as well as to the basic concepts of sterilization and working conduct recommended by biosafety rules.
Abstract The washing and sterilization rooms are considered areas of technical support and health-care facilities, therefore, they must be constructed, expanded or improved to meet its basic function as to provide clean material, decontaminated, ensuring inactivation of pathogenic microorganisms. A project aiming to reduce occupational exposure to biological agents of risk and meet the technical guidance of the Ministry of Health was carried out at the Instituto Oswaldo Cruz for adequacy of washing and sterilization rooms. Information collected from inspections performed showed poor facilities, obsolete autoclaves, lack of personal protective equipment and the need for professional training. The project was designed as part of a biosecurity program that proposes infrastructure works as well as the replacement of pipelines, sizing of mains, flooring, and walls, among others. It also identified key features of autoclaves and personal protective equipment and training needs of professionals working in these areas. The entire project was planned to meet the professional's need for safety, protection of material used, the accuracy of the results, and the efficiency of workflow as well as the environmental protection. Keywords: washing and sterilization rooms; biosafety; adequacy of physical space; protection equipment; professional education.
