[[abstract]]After Taiwan’s entry into WTO, agricultural production structure has been adjusted and moved toward refined and leisure oriented. To protect and make good use of natural resources, promote farmland and water construction plan, and improve agricultural production and operation environment in order to maintain natural ecological environment, this study aimed to change the original irrigation and drainage rural ditch to ecological rural ditch with nature-working method, thus to provide flora and fauna-friendly habitat to align with the production, living and ecology policy advocated by the government. According to the perspectives of farmland and water organizations, government bureaus, and about 30 rural ditch research articles published, rural ditch ecological subject is starting to attract international attention. Rural ditch ecological issue has been actively emphasized and discussed in recently years. Considering the low public participation on this issue, this study aimed to understand the difference and correlation between the cognition of ecological restoration and environmental attitudes towards environment of people with different backgrounds, thus identifying aspects that need to be strengthened in the future and providing references for rural ditch environment improvement.Through questionnaire, this study expected to learn about the public’s cognition of ecological remediation and environmental attitudes towards environment, and discuss the relationship among “people’s backgrounds”, “cognition of rural ditch ecological remediation”, “environmental attitudes towards rural ditch ecological remediation environment”. According to the research results, 57.9% of respondents knew about rural ditch ecological remediation from mass media; people aged below 20 and above 60, unemployed or retired, with lower educational background, lack the knowledge on rural ditch ecological remediation. People who are never involved in rural ditch ecological improvement related work nor received environmental education, showed lower level of cognition of rural ditch ecological remediation and less identity towards environment protection. The results indicated that there is a medium correlation between respondents’ cognition of rural ditch ecological remediation and environmental attitudes towards the environment. Therefore, government and related units should place emphasis on people who do not have sufficient access to rural ditch environment issue and start environmental education with the younger population, promote better understanding of ecological environment to foster better environmental attitude. Certain rural ditch environment improvement learning sessions should also be held to improve the interaction between the public and rural ditch, thus enhancing the efficiency of rural ditch ecological remediation implementation.
