Abstract
Great human tragedies always leave revealing traces that can help us to better understand the challenges that in one way or another society and medicine must keep facing. In this article smallpox, scourge of mankind, is analysed from a historic point of view that allows, on one hand, to remind the talent and sacrifi ce of those who never ceased to search for its erradication, and, on the other hand, explain the evolution that medical ethics has experienced from a traditional deontology to a moral more modern and committed with the search of solutions to the health problems that concern the international community.
