Abstract
The paper presents the results of studying Nganasan fairy tales for children. The author traces the origin of Nganasan children’s fairy tales back to the mythological epic tales of the Nganasan people (sitaby) and to the historical national traditions (diurymy). The author also looks into the possibility of applying morphological and semantic analysis to understanding Nganasan fairy tales, resulting in description of some aspects of the worldview of the Nganasan people, along with their moral and value judgments, which are transferred by children’s literature to the younger generation

    Šamanismist ja tšuktši šamaanide ravimisriitustest

    Ülo Siimets (Eesti Kirjandusmuuseum, 2006-01-01)
The article attempts to answer the question "Who is a shaman?" on the basis of the available literature and the author's observations made during his 1971 trip to the land of the Chukchi. The article opens with an overview of materials published on the topic. Shamanism is one of the most intriguing and popular religious phenomena, mostly practised by indigenous peoples in North Siberia and North America. The shamans control spirits that reside in themselves and may distance themselves from the existing reality in order to travel or fly to other worlds. A shaman, who is conventionally a man, may consume hallucinogenic substances to perform rituals or alter the state of consciousness. The article concludes with a description of a healing session, carried out by Ejgeli, the shaman of the reindeer herding group, who successfully cured the injured foot of a teenage boy.

Assigned Territories, Family/Clan/Communal Holdings, and Common-Pool Resources in the Taimyr Autonomous Region, Northern Russia

    Ziker, John P. (ScholarWorks, 2003-09-01)
This paper describes an indigenous hunting/fishing/trapping economy in the Taimyr Autonomous Region, northern Russia, and traces the continuities and developments in property since the collapse of the Soviet command economy in 1991. Indigenous relations to hunting grounds and renewable resources are discussed with ethnographic case material from Dolgan and Nganasan communities. Land tenure is analyzed in terms of inclusive and exclusive property and informal and formal resource management. The asymmetric growth and distribution of common-pool territories and private holdings is a central issue. A number of factors when examined together appear to favor common property and traditional management including ancestral frames of morality and access, crosscutting kin relationships, principles of ownership and mutual aid, cooperative hunting, sharing of meat and fish, as well as migration patterns of prey species and relative increases in the cost of freight transport since 1991. In addition, private holdings often make commercial sales and generally have better access to urban centers, while they are more closely regulated through land, tax, and environment offices of local government.
