Abstract
[[abstract]]In recent years the construction industry has been undergoing some major changes and become more and more aware of integration of people activities and materials as well as planning and management Furthermore in addition to knowledge in technical areas employers have placed more emphasis on basic capabilities of their employees Thus courses on construction management and general education have increasingly attracted greater attention However the connections between such courses offered by universities and the competency requirements of the industry are yet to be explored Therefore this study investigated the degrees of connections of current courses on construction management and general education with the industry’s requirements for occupational competency First through a literature review a questionnaire including related issues was designed and industry professionals were invited to participate in the survey The results of analyzing the collected data from the survey shows that the respondents generally agree that current courses on construction management and general education as a whole are “very important for acquiring the required abilities before entering the industry” With respect to courses on construction management the respondents regard “construction laws and regulations” “construction quality management” and “contracts and specifications” as more closely connected with occupational competency With respect to courses on general education they regard “communication and coordination” “negotiation skills” “ethics for engineers and professionals” and “law and life” as more relevant courses
