Abstract
This article is about the training of online tutors, i.e. tutors involved in open and distance learning (ODL). The tutor is first seen as one among the other players taking part in the ODL by the author, who then proceeds to examine the different tasks the tutor has to perform and an adaptative pattern of tutoring according to the type of ODL considered. The author then expounds the necessary skills of a distant tutor and describes several cases of tutor training. Seven stages in the training of tutors are put forward, ranging from the future tutor attending a distant learning experience to his or her learning how to regulate the tutoring.
