  • Forgiveness and Ubuntu:A Study of the Theological Contribution of Desmond Tutu

    Kobe, Sandiswa Lerato (2023-12-05)
Currently South Africa is going through a period of political and social instability. The new generations contest the legacy of ‘rainbow nation’, reconciliation, forgiveness and ubuntu as personified by Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu in the new South Africa. Tutu introduced the Christian language of forgiveness into the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of South Africa (TRC) and in this way provided his own Christian interpretation of the constitutional mandate of the TRC in terms of ‘unity and national reconciliation.’ He was only able to do that because he wrapped his forgiveness rational in the language of ubuntu. In South Africa, his interpretation of national reconciliation in terms of forgiveness was contested. The media too optimistically hyped individual acts of forgiveness at the TRC, suggesting that these moments could become catalysts for national reconciliation and unity on the way to nation-building. Internationally, Christians celebrated this societal use of the theology of forgiveness at the TRC, sometimes not understanding the ubuntu background of Tutu’s forgiveness discourse. Because the ubuntu concept was unfamiliar, the strings attached to forgiveness were missed. Some Christian theologians were uncomfortable about Tutu’s apparent unproblematic encouragement to forgive. They feared that he had simplified the Christian message of forgiveness. Against this background, this thesis offers a critical analysis of Desmond Tutu’s notions of forgiveness and ubuntu in changing contexts in South Africa. In the end the thesis systematises and proposes a more nuanced understanding of Desmond Tutu’s notions of forgiveness and ubuntu in changing context before and after 1994.

  • Eliseo Ferrer / El mundo cananeo primitivo.

This contribution aims to expand the extant investigations on the confrontations that took place between the Christian king of Ethiopia ‘Amda Ṣǝyon (1314-1344), the Egyptian metropolitan Yā‘ǝqob (1337-1344) and the missionary monks from the Takla Haymānot’s network. In order to do so, it will study an extensive hagiographic dossier, dating between the 14th and the 16th centuries, which contains many valuable elements that explain the policy adopted by ‘Amda Ṣǝyon towards his Muslim subjects. Through the analysis of the hagiographic sources within the framework of the period in which they were written, this study attempts to identify the reasons why the Ethiopian king sent the supreme leader of the Ethiopian Church Yā‘ǝqob back to Egypt in 1344.
  • Implementasi Regulasi Keuangan Berkelanjutan Pada Bank Syariah dan Bank Konvensional di Indonesia

Mabruri Andatu; Abdurrahman Hilabi (STAI Publisistik Thawalib Jakarta, 2023-03-01)
This article describes the implementation of sustainable financial policies by Islamic Banks and Conventional Banks in supporting environmentally sound business activities in their business activities to minimize environmental damage. The research method in this study is the normative juridical method, namely descriptive-analytical. This research concludes that after the publication of the sustainable finance policy, the business activities of financial service institutions are still in the stage of raising awareness of the financial system in providing financing. Then in its operations, it still calculates paper savings, construction of green buildings, and the amount of financing provided to the company. So that the business activities carried out still cause damage to the environment.
  • Competing perceptions of landscape in the Limi Valley: politics, ecology and pastoralism

    Tara Bate
A common response to the current global ecological crisis is the conservation of areas still somewhat spared from anthropogenic damage, in spite of an abundant literature evidencing the social and ecological shortcomings of top-down approaches to nature conservation. As part of the Kailash Sacred Landscape Initiative, the Limi Valley of north-western Nepal is currently under consideration for the establishment of one such area. This paper warns about an understanding of conservation as a segregation of humans and nature, which is at odds with local perceptions of landscape as relational. Through the perspective of pastoral practices in the Limi Valley, I show how the Limey – the people of this Valley – conceive of humans as enmeshed within a network of interacting beings under the guiding principles of ecological ethics of care. This conception is framed by religion (a syncretic mixture of Mahayana Buddhism, Bön religion and Animism), as well as by skills of ecological and spiritual embeddedness which are central to pastoral practice. I also warn against the fallacy of considering locals’ relationship to the environment, informed by Buddhism, as intrinsically more prone to eco-friendly practices. I show how this relationship is dynamic and evolving, and influenced by the economic and political context of the last thirty years. This has led to the progressive obsolescence of pastoralism as the main means of livelihood, with consequences for the local inhabitants’ relationship to landscape and to other-than-human species.

Since the murchidât appeared, the religious role of education by women in the public sphere is originally recognized. The State, and hence the national media, present them as a way of spreading a modern and feminist moroccan islam. These new preachers have followed a degree course in the fields of islamic law and social sciences. They are active in prisons, hospitals, professional and associative places where they mainly deal with women. But if we look closer, these social assistants, instructors, guides of the islamic precepts and the new family code, stand in an ambivalent situation. On one side, they are supposed to attest good governance, and on the other side, they promote the religious identity of the country as a protection from the fundamentalist borrowings.

The Islamic veil (hijab) has been prominent in the media and political discussion in France since 1989 and the first “veil affair”; this has intensified since 2003 and the law on wearing religious signs at school. As such it is a condensed version of political significations and reveals those tensions internal to feminism which are reticent to, or opposed to, the inclusion in their discourse and practice of any consideration relating to the close link between colonial history on one hand, and the struggles and definitions of feminism on the other. The veil has de facto been constructed as an anomaly within the Republic, a religious sign which more generally speaking comes up against the common sense of equality of the sexes and secularism as constitutive values of the West. This article does not dwell on the meaning of the veil—polysemous as it may well be (Mahmood, 2009; Bouyahia and Samia, 2013)—but on the aspects of public space, and in particular of feminism (Dot-Pouillard, 2007), revealed by the veil since 1989. In the first case the tensions revealed have heightened with the rise in the assertions of a feminism, described as “decolonial”, expressed by women from the ethnic and cultural minorities (women referred to as “racialised”) and who demand an off-centre model for liberation of women. In the second case, we witness the political opportunism revealed by the politicisation of the hijab and its constitution as an object conducive to the generation of phobias which acts as a new “social cement” (Antonio Gramsci quoted in Hall, 2008) for the working classes fragmented and weakened by the ending of models of national sovereignty and social and economic protectionism.
  • Gender and Islam in Development Policy and Practice in Yemen

    Ewa Strzelecka
The present paper discusses the intersection and inter-connection of Islam, gender, and development policy and practice in Yemen since the 1990s. Special attention is paid to the complexity of how gender work reflects tension and continuity between aspiration and reality in the context of shifting meanings and perspectives in current human development theory. Not only are women from developing countries placed at the centre of development processes, but so their cultures are also discussed, as they are finally visible.  In a number of developmental projects in Yemen, Islam now appears as an interesting means for gender and development advancement. However, there is still a gap between theory and practice when implementing these new perspectives in international development. The article spotlights how Yemeni women’s agency shaped and was shaped by a complex combination of shifting meanings, uses and effects of Islam, gender and development. It leads to the conclusion that religious and cultural considerations need to be taken into account, but with close attention paid to power relations and ensuing gender implications in terms of bargaining power. Research findings reaffirm the crucial role of the women’s movement in the process of social change towards gender transformations in Yemen.

  • Two Documents on the 1895 Massacres of Syriacs in the Province of Diyarbekir: A Discussion

David Gaunt (Bibliothèque Nubar de l'UGAB, 2018-03-01)
The massacres of 1895-1896 targeted mainly Armenians, but many Assyrians of various religious denominations were also caught up in the violence and plundering. This presentation is based on several hitherto unused sources which focus on the Assyrian experience. One is the narrative of Makdisi Habib Jarwe who was a Syriac Catholic priest serving in Mardin and who died in 1915. The second source comes from a diary-like notebook composed by the American missionary Alpheus Andrus, based in Mardin. The towns and villages covered are those in which the American missionaries brought some help to Syriac communities such as the towns of Mardin and Siirt as well as the Beshiri region.
