Abstract
An exploratory study is carried out on the importance of ethics among information professionals and the specific case of Portugal and its ethics code for information professionals (Código de Ética para os profissionais da informação) from 1999 is dealt with. The concept of associationism and its importance in ethics is developed, and the relationships which are implied in the development of the ethics code under study are examined. On the other hand, an attempt to disaggregate the ethical values included in the codes, derived from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, is made. As a conclusion, and supported by a questionnaire thrown to Portuguese information professionals, several graphics and charts are made. These provide information of great use about the state of professional ethics in Portugal, from the importance of ethics in the development of the professional functions to the resolutive capacity provided by the code, going
through those aspects included in it which are considered of further use and those which require certain improvement or update.
