AbstractThis paper describes an Intelligent Language Tutoring System (ILTS) for German. The German Tutor is the grammar component of a comprehensive multi-media course, specifically adapted for distance education over the World Wide Web. The Intelligent Tutor parses students answers to introductory language exercises. The system analyzes the linguistic source of an error and reports its description to the student. Through this analysis it infers an approximation of the learners competence and adapts the instructional strategy accordingly. The main advantage of the system is its ability to individualize instruction and to provide insight to the student as an inherent feature of learning exercises.
