This collection has been reduced to just the topics covered under the new AP Physics 1 curriculum.

    Promoting Productive Uses of Electricity in Rural Areas of Peru

    The Government of Peru is committed to
 improving rural electrification coverage, aiming to increase
 rural coverage from an estimated 55 percent at the end of
 2010 to 88 percent by 2020. To achieve this goal, the
 Directorate General of Rural Electrification (DGER) of the
 Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM) has been implementing and
 executing the National Plan for Rural Electrification,
 prepared annually, based on the 2006 Rural Electrification
 Law, to extend service and attract participation of the
 population, local governments and electricity distribution
 companies. Within this program, the World Bank (WB) and
 Global Environmental Facility (GEF) are supporting the
 Directorate of Competitive Funds (DFC) of the DGER in the
 implementation and execution of the Rural Electrification
 (RE) Project, initiated in July 2006 and the Second Rural
 Electrification Project initiated in July 2011, to assist
 electricity distribution companies to implement rural
 electrification. Among the activities underway in the first
 RE Project is the implementation of a pilot program to
 develop the productive use of electricity, promoting
 opportunities for income generation in rural areas. This
 report provides an early assessment of the productive uses
 of electricity in Peru under the RE Project.

    Welfare Impacts of Rural Electrification : A Case Study from Bangladesh

    Lack of access to electricity is one of
 the major impediments to growth and development of the rural
 economies in developing countries. That is why access to
 modern energy, in particular to electricity, has been one of
 the priority themes of the World Bank and other development
 organizations. Using a cross-sectional survey conducted in
 2005 of some 20,000 households in rural Bangladesh, this
 paper studies the welfare impacts of households' grid
 connectivity. Based on rigorous econometric estimation
 techniques, this study finds that grid electrification has
 significant positive impacts on households' income,
 expenditure, and educational outcomes. For example, the gain
 in total income due to electrification can be as much as 30
 percent and as low as 9 percent. Benefits go up steadily as
 household exposure to grid electrification (measured by
 duration) increases and eventually reach a plateau. This
 paper also finds that rich households benefit more from
 electrification than poor households. Finally, estimates
 also show that income benefits of electrification on an
 average exceed cost by a wide margin.

    The Potential of Regional Power Sector Integration : Nam Theun 2 Generation Case Study

    Developing countries are increasingly
 pursuing and benefitting from regional power system
 integration (RPSI) as an important strategy to help provide
 reliable, affordable electricity to their economies and
 citizens. Increased electricity cooperation and trade
 between countries can enhance energy security, bring
 economies-of-scale in investments, facilitate financing,
 enable greater renewable energy penetration, and allow
 synergistic sharing of complementary resources. This
 briefing note draws from the experiences of RPSI schemes
 around the world to present a set of findings to help
 address these challenges. It is based on case studies of 12
 RPSI projects and how they are dealing with key aspects of
 RPSI, such as: (i) finding the right level of integration;
 (ii) optimizing investment on a regional basis; (iii)
 appropriate regional institutions (iv) technical and
 regulatory harmonization; (v) power sector reform and
 integration (vi) the role of donor agencies (vii) reducing
 emissions through RPSI; and (viii) RPSI and renewable energy.
