AbstractNew Zealand is a great place, it is also geographically isolated, and this has led, in comparison to Europe, to an insular approach by the media, which ultimately touches us all. So the aim of this case study was twofold; firstly to broaden students cultural understanding of a group of students overseas studying a similar design degree programme, whilst working on a 3d animated project for the first time, and secondly, whilst working alongside, they were to communicate by way of an online resource. It was important that they collectively viewed the same project develop and refine from not only a cultural perspective but also from a social, educational and geographical viewpoint. As a platform from which to base this experience an online Course Management System, was implemented, due to its ease of use, and it’s open source licensing. This was purely used as a course resource, but a dynamic and interactive one. It enabled project briefs and tutorials to be uploaded and exchanged and through a forum based structure it allowed dialogue between both students and staff. The experience allowed some free debate between both sets of students, and demonstrated the advantage of a ‘common ground’ to aid a collaborative learning community. The identical project brief had been rewritten that took advantage of the possible cultural and social differences between both sets of students. The outcome was a rich and varied project that was stronger in previous years and with a level of visible process that can be made available to future students.
