What do we mean by development, and what kind of development do we want? What can we learn from alternative life concepts? How to push forward a new development paradigm? These are three key questions of Dialogue4change, a joint initiative of Bread For All and the Swiss Lenten Fund, two faith based development organizations committed to building in solidarity a more equitable world, respectful of all creation. Dialogue4change aims at reaching innovative concepts, as guidance and lobbying tool for all those who are striving for a more responsible, caring world. The dialogue4change is inter-disciplinary and gathers people from all parts of the world.

  • Subcultures and sustainability practices: The impact on understanding corporate sustainability

    Russell, S.; Linnenluecke, M. K.; Griffiths, A. (John Wiley & Sons, 2007)
In this paper we present findings of how employees from a single organization understand corporate sustainability. Responses from 255 survey participants indicate (1) that differences exist in how employees understand corporate sustainability and (2) that these differences can be partially explained by the presence of organizational subcultures and by differences in employee awareness of the organization's sustainability practices. In particular, findings reveal that employees from a subculture with a stronger emphasis on hierarchical and bureaucratic values emphasize an economic understanding of corporate sustainability. Implications for research and practice are discussed. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd and ERP Environment.
  • Stepping in for the Polluters? Climate Justice under Partial Compliance

Hohl, Sabine; Roser, Dominic (Lucius and Lucius Verlagsgesellschaft, 2011)
Not all countries do their fair share in the effort of preventing dangerous climate change. This presents those who are willing to do their part with the question whether they should 'take up the slack' and try to compensate for the non-compliers' failure to reduce emissions. There is a pro tanto reason for doing so given the human rights violations associated with dangerous climate change. The article focuses on fending off two objections against a duty to take up the slack: that it is unfair and ineffective. We grant that it is unfair if some have to step in for others but argue that this does not amount to a decisive objection under conditions of partial compliance. With regard to the charge of emission reductions being ineffective, we argue that the empirical case for this claim is missing and that even if it were not, there still remains the option of taking up the slack in other forms.
  • Post-2012 Burden Sharing: Towards an Ethical Approach

    Boston, Jonathan; Kengmana, Lucas (2012-12-17)
This paper explores how the costs of mitigating and adapting to climate change should be shared by the international community. While it briefly surveys other desiderata for a new global agreement on climate change for the post-2012 period, its primary focus is on the ethical issues posed by the imperative to address human-induced climate change, and in particular the principles and considerations that should inform an ethical approach to global burden sharing. The first part of the paper outlines the context surrounding the current international negotiations for a new global agreement on climate change, which is designed to take effect when the first commitment period under the Kyoto Protocol expires at the end of 2012. This includes consideration of the criteria that any new agreement must address and the relevance and importance of ethics at the international level. The second part examines burden sharing from an ethical perspective. It assesses the relevance and validity of a number of principles of distributive justice that are widely discussed in the relevant climate change literature – most notably, equality, capacity, historical responsibility, need, monetary costs and welfare costs. It then uses these principles to evaluate six proposed burden sharing frameworks. The third part considers the implications of these burden sharing frameworks for New Zealand. This includes a brief examination of the possible impacts of various proposed changes to some of the key rules underpinning the Kyoto Protocol.
  • Entwicklung neu denken [Questioning Development]
