The life of Haydn is, in the main, a plagiarism of G. Carpani's Le Haydine (Milan, 1812) The biographical part of the Mozart, credited by Beyle to Schlichtegroll, is practically a reproduction of Winckler's Noticebiographique sur Jean-Chrysostome-Wolfgang-Théophile Mozart (Paris, 1801) with one anecdote added from another source. The last letter of the Mozart and the letter on Metastasio ae by Bele. cf. M. H. Beyle, Vies de Haydn, de Mozart et de Métastase; texte établi et annoté par Daniel Muller, préface de Romain Rolland (Paris, Champion, 1914) The notice of Mozart, attributed by Muller to C. Winckler, is by T. F. Winckler. cf. Fétis, Biog. univ. des musiciens. 2. éd. VIII, 476; Quérard, France litt.; A. Schurig, Wolfgang Amade Mozart (Leipzig, 1923) I, 11.First edition published 1814 under the pseud. L. A. C. Bombet, as "Lettres sur le célèbre compositeur Joseph Haydn [etc.]"
