Materials and Methods: Electronic searches of MEDLINE, ERIC and PsycINFO were performed for original articles in the English language published in peer reviewed international journals. Evaluation: Information about implementing different organisational models for instructional multimedia programmes is missing. Most sequencing studies have not even used hypermedia as a medium for instruction. Empirical research is abundant at the micro-level of sequencing while at the macro-level the literature presents some theoretical design models in the absence of an empirical basis. Conclusion: Further research is needed on the methods, macro-sequencing strategies, and models that influence a cognitive process when using non-linear multimedia in dental education and orthodontic training.
