AbstractThere are several ongoing themed discussions related to the uncertain future, the need for more adaptive leadership and fighting forces, and the delivery of collective results via the employment of smart power. These highlight and parallel the national discussion of national tools of power/all of government approach for complex international environments. Yet the author finds little or limited integrated discussion of these themes, beyond some generalizations. Wheeler (2012) points out that Boyd explained . . . material elements come in a poor third in deciding which side wins conflict -- after moral and mental factors. Likewise, he notes that Napoleon said, the moral is to the physical as three to one. This paper will explore several aspects of personnel developmental factors, including moral and mental factors, which may likely assist with the long-term preparation of capable decision makers who are able to act for the common good during an uncertain future in degraded, underdeveloped, and denied operational environments -- the real world and environment.

Premarital Preparation and Marital Satisfaction: What Utah Individuals are Doing to Prepare for Marriage and How Premarital Preparation Can Enhance Marital SatisfactionBelmap Foster, Fay L. (DigitalCommons@USU, 2007-01-01)This is a systematic representative sample study of newlyweds designed to investigate aspects of participation in marriage preparation activities as well as determine what effect participation in activities had on marital satisfaction. A retrospective survey instrument was utilized which included the Kansas Marital Satisfaction Scale. Statistical analysis revealed that the majority of individuals in Utah prepare for marriage by visiting with parents or relatives, visiting with other married couples, and talking with religious leaders, and considered these activities to be helpful in their preparation. The small er percentage of individuals who participated in more formal preparation activities also considered these activities to be very helpful. Wives and husbands who attended a class and talked with religious leaders showed significant increases in marital satisfaction within a year after marriage. In addition, marital sati sfaction was increased for wives who read a book on marriage and for husbands who visited with their parents, relatives, or other married couples. Findings show that bringing children into marriage, parents' marital status, and age are factors associated with marital satisfaction.
Preparing for Changes in Teacher Preparation Program Accountability: Evaluating the Factors that Influence Job Placement of Teacher Preparation Program GraduatesJohnson, Amy F. (USM Digital Commons, 2015-01-01)Teacher preparations programs are facing increased pressure to report on the outcomes of their graduates, including their job placement rates. Prior research on job placement for teachers establishes that a variety of factors are related to whether or not individuals apply for and receive jobs. This research study explored these factors through quantitative analysis of three cohorts of teacher preparation program completers within the University of Maine system, using logistic regression to identify the individual and contextual characteristics that are most predictive of job application and hiring.
Perceptions of Health Educators and Supervisors about their Preparation in Alexandria, Egypt (How Well They Believe their Training and Preparation Prepared Them to Work as Health Educators)Ahmed, Elshaymaa (ScholarWorks@UMass Amherst, 2014-01-01)Health educators have many responsibilities, including community education, assessment program development, evaluation, research, health policy and grant writing. Health educators in Egypt do not participate in all these activities, but they mostly do participate in essential activities such as community education. The health educators in Egypt get training and preparation on topics such as addiction, women’s health, chronic diseases, and the skills needed for teaching. This study investigated the perceptions of health educators and their supervisors about how well they believe their training and preparation has prepared them to work with health clients in Alexandria, Egypt. The study includes interviews with 11 health educators and four supervisors, all from different parts of Alexandria. The interview questions covered topics such as the way the health educators were prepared, what they studied, whether they apply everything they have learned, if they think the preparation was enough, and how they perceive themselves in performing their role as a health educator. The results showed that most of the health educators claimed that they were getting good preparation. There is no specific educational program or curriculum that health educators follow to be prepared for their jobs. Health educators do get workshops and trainings from the Ministry of Heath throughout the year on different topics based on the interests of their community. However, results of the study showed that they do not agree on a common goal for their role as health educators. In the interviews, health educators indicated that they want more training. They also stated that they are lacking places to give health education classes, and that they are facing a resource constraints in running health education programs.
