Universal Design for Learning and Multimedia Technology: Supporting Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students
AbstractUniversal Design for Learning (UDL) is a framework for designing instruction that addresses learner variability. The UDL guidelines define how flexible options can be integrated into curriculum and instruction to meet the needs of a range of learners. This paper presents two cases in which UDL is integrated into learning processes to support the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse K-12 students. Teachers in both cases use multimedia technologies creatively to meet specific instructional goals, while taking into account the needs of Pacific islander immigrant students in their classrooms. The projects described take into consider student engagement, culturally responsive practices and academic outcomes for students.
