This presentation is intended to examine media literacy in the classroom. Media literacy plays a significant role in how children see the world. Children are continually bombarded by media messages whether it stems from YouTube videos, advertisements, TV commercials, Apps or other web based interactions. This in turn affects how they negotiate meaning from text or visual images. Specific instructional strategies are needed to assist students and teachers in media use. These instructional strategies include students examining digital authorship, analyzing contemporary media, and creating their own media messages. This is demonstrated by screen casting a critical analysis of a commercial and creating an advertisement using persuasive details and vivid adjectives. In turn these strategies give students and teachers the necessary tools for critical analysis of advertising, culture and connected learning while deepening teacher knowledge.Date
