Acquiring the ability to carry out independent work form part of an undergraduate education in the sciences. This paper describes a problem concerning dam spillage monitoring, which is an example of a project offered in an undergraduate Applied Science Program. Several hydrological data of a dam in Kedah, Malaysia were provided by researchers. Using the statistical software R, the project involves finding relationship between these data which might be useful in monitoring the spillage at the dam. This two semesters’ long project proved to be an excellent avenue for a project based learning. Skills that were further developed include problem posing, thinking of questions and use of technology to solve problems, something which is encouraged by the educational authorities. Details of the project and lessons learned during the course of this educational experience are providedDate
