Abstract
AbstractBased on the concepts of practices, representations and appropriation (Roger Chartier), collective memory (Maurice Halbwachs) and underground memory (Michael Pollak), this article analyzes contemporary appropriations of Umbanda’s pretos-velhos (“old black” spirits). Using oral history methodology, it investigates how the experience of regularly visiting and consulting with pretos-velhos informs clients’ constructions of perspectives, values and expectations. The focus is on the re-elaboration of the memory of African slavery in Brazil. The analysis illustrates the importance of these entities for those who recognize themselves as black and who establish in this way a closer bond with this figure of a sacralized slave. Keywords: umbanda - representation - pretos-velhos - oral history - memory.
