AbstractAt a comparatively early date in the history of the Christian church it was made a part of the creed, to which every believer was required to subscribe, that Jesus Christ was bornof the Virgin Mary. The reason for this was of course the fact that the doctrine had scriptural authority. Of the four gospels which were accepted by the church as true accounts of the events recorded therein, the two which gave any account of the birth of Jesus at all represented Him as being born of a virgin. There was no difficulty whatever at that time in accepting such a story as literally true. [...]
