La Bhagavad Gita según San Madero

Abstract

Having as context the large and varied Bhagavad Gita's reception in the 19th century, this essay develops the particular reading that Francisco I. Madero did of this hindu text, from a spiritualist point of view, something according to the boom of the neoreligious trends like Spiritualism and Theosophy at the turn of the century. This situation happens at the same time that some artists and intellectuals take an interest in the Orient and specially the philosophies of India, like José Vasconcelos in Mexico, reader of the Madero's commentaries.

A partir del contexto de la creciente recepción que tuvo la Bhagavad Gita en el siglo XIX en Europa, se revisa en este ensayo la particular lectura que realizó Francisco I. Madero de dicho texto hindú desde una perspectiva espiritista, algo muy acorde con el auge que vivían por entonces corrientes neorreligiosas como el espiritismo y la teosofía y en las que él tuvo una participación importante (sobre todo en la primera). Esto coincidió también con el interés "orientalista" que mostraban algunos artistas e intelectuales, como José Vasconcelos en el caso de México, conocedor de los comentarios de Madero.
