Abstract
Temporal Subjects | Without monogram. No date. | The woodcut is entitled Herr Carol der Christenlich Keyser vnd König, Ertzhertzog zu Osterreich...[Sir Charles, the Christian Emperor and King, Archduke in Austria...]. It is printed from two blocks, the lower one measuring 193 mm. This lower block was used also for the portrait of Philip of Hesse, (issued by Hans Guldenmund).1 | Roettinger suggests that the upper portion was modelled after a half-length portrait of a prince on a coin or medal. The text suggests a date of 1528 or 1529 for the cutting of this block, because of the declaration of war of François I against Charles in January 1528. | 1. See GS.1293-3. An earlier version is the woodcut by Michael Ostendorfer (GS.971), that was also issued by Hans Guldenmund. It will be illustrated in TIB 14 commentary.Type
