Abstract
People have always attempted to influence the sex of their children. Until recently, prenatal screening followed by abortion of the undesired fetus was the only effective method, and most people who used that method did it to avoid the birth of girls. Today, preconception sex selection is becoming available, and people in the West are more likely to want to 'balance' their families than to avoid girls. These developments raise new questions about the ethics of sex selection.Date
