dc.description.abstract~In the Early Christian period Nikopolis became the center of new artistic and intellectual activity. The Byzantine walls were built during the second half of the 5th century AD to protect the city from raids of barbarians. The new walls reduced the size of the town to one sixth that of the Roman city. They take the form of irregular quadrilateral, reinforced by a large number of towers. The construction technique brings to mind Roman opus incertum mixtum. The walls have survived mostly on the two straight sides, the west and south. The rest of the wall was founded on the Roman fortification. The main gate, the 'Arapoporta", follows the model of Roman gates.
