Firstly,More蒺s religious view derived from and surpassed the early humanist tradition. Secondly, his brand of religious humanism likewise derived from and transcended Christian humanism. Finally, this paper aims to explore the features of religious humanism, with Thomas More as its principle exponent. Based on the historical facts and background, and an understanding of More蒺s religious creed, one may better understand the Renaissance humanists蒺view. From the Italian poet Dante, to Petrarch (“ The Father of Humanism冶),to the Englishman Thomas More,their religious thought could be traced to the same origin,the theory of free will and the cooperation between man and God. The early humanists蒺 idealism was, however, stuck in theory. More made this dream more concrete, practical and institutionalized. Utopia is heaven on earth. More always interpreted Christianity from the standpoint of his humanism. He was faithful to religion,but he believed in law. He suggested that people could live happily in the world by free will,but the immortality of the soul requires assistance from God.
