The deep problem in this paper is about the roots of tradition of Islamic studies at educational institutions in Indonesia. Besides, this paper also intends to explore the influence of the West against toward Islamic studies in Indonesia. This paper is a literature review where the historical approach was used to investigate it. The result shows that the Islamic studies cannot be separated from the Orientalism on the context of history and also it included the history of Christianity. In Indonesia, Islamic Studies had long existed and become an important study, because it has become a necessity for Moslems, especially in the academic context learned in UIN, IAIN, and STAIN.
