A idéia é abordar a disputa entre os reformadores iluministas e os jesuítas enquanto uma competição entre duas diferentes apropriações de um conjunto de proposições filosóficas em voga no século XVIII, considerando que tanto os jesuítas quanto os chamados 'iluministas ibéricos' tentavam conciliar as novas idéias com premissas tradicionais, ainda que em diferentes direções. O embate trava-se, portanto, no interior do iluminismo ibérico, tanto metropolitano quanto colonial.
