Abstract
The early Qing missionary doctrine of Revering Heaven is a system of thought based on the doctrine of God-Heaven through the reinterpretation of ancient Confucian classics with Catholic resources. This article is a case study on the document Mirror of the Old and New Doctrine of Revering Heaven, which was written by early Qing Jesuit Joachim Bouvet (1656-1730). The article explores the main content, the meaning, and the hermeneutical strategy of Bouvet‟s doctrine of Revering Heaven. It also compares the similarities and differences between Bouvet and Chinese Catholic Yan Mo‟s doctrine of Revering Heaven in order to show the logical basis of Bouvet‟s Doctrine. The Missionary Doctrine of Revering Heaven is the result of their accommodation strategy to preach in China. However, it was not acknowledged and accepted by the main Confucian scholars because of its far-fetched interpretations of the ancient Confucian classics.
