Abstract
"It is a Kairotic year. 2005 is a special year for the Korean people in historical terms. It is the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Korean people from the colonial yoke and at the same time if the division of the Korean people by the military occupation of the US and USSR. It is also a 40th anniversary of the so-called“ normalization”treaty between South Korea and Japan, against which the Korean people vehemently resisted. It is the 110th anniversary of the Tonghak Peasant Revolutionary Movement and Sino-Japanese War over Korean Peninsula, and the 100th anniversary of the Russo-Japanese War over Korean peninsula and the forced annexation of Korea to Japan. It is a complex anniversary of the tragic Korean historical events and at the same time of the series of resistance movements of the Korean people. In this year Korean theologians and Christian scholars and intellectuals are reflecting upon these historical experiences in search for peace and life in the North East Asia as well as in Korea. In this year of historical significance and meaning we are very happy that Korean Christian Faculty Fellowship is opening the International Consultation on Peace for Life in North East Asia. We are also keenly conscious that the peace and security in North East Asia is under threat due to the global hegemonic geopolitics of the global empire. Since the election of the Bush administration the hopeful development for the reunification of the Korean people and peace on Korean peninsula is seriously jeopardized due to the aggressive policy of the Bush administration. We felt that it is our prophetic duty to deal with the issue of peace for life in North East Asia together with committed Christian intellectuals and others in solidarity. It is my great pleasure to recognize the contribution of our international colleagues to this issue of the Madang as well as to appreciate the fine contribution of young Korean theologians. Especially we are very grateful to those who have agreed to serve as our international members in the board of editors. This makes our journal that of truly international solidarity. We are expecting much fruit from this development. We would like to thank for special contributions of Tissa Balasuriya, O.M.I., and Wolfgang R. Schmidt. Two timely and fresh articles by Ji-Seok Jung and Mee-Hyun Chung are deepening our theological reflection on our national aspiration for reunification and peace on Korean peninsula. We are also very happy that dialogues with the Korean and Asian religious tradition and with the modern science are being deepened among us as major theological issues. Contributions of Eun-Hee Shin and Ki-Suk Kim are making fresh attempts for theological dialogues with East and West. We are looking forward to widening participation of international scholars as well as Korean scholars in their editorial advice and contributions."(pg 4)
