Abstract
As a pioneer of bioethics, Daniel Callahan devoted much of his studies to public health, an obligatory subject of this discipline. The objective of this study is to give a general look at the work of Callahan and to confirm, as even in public health was installed the “tyranny”, inspired aspect of the Socratic philosophy. To achieve this purpose, the author’s thought was investigated in various sources (books, interviews, articles) to reconstruct his ideas. Callahan does not limit himself to making denunciations about the tyrannies of survival, technology, individualism and health, on the contrary, in his books is dedicated to the construction and defense of the universal health system, solidarity, equitable, which should not depend on capacity to pay. It also suggests considering the future of bioethics as an interdisciplinary proposal.
