"Parecía hasta hace poco imposible que regímenes dictatoriales consolidados durante más de 40 años, como muchos del mundo árabe, pudieran ser cuestionados y la gente pudiera acceder a derechos democráticos. Está sucediendo en el marco de la Primavera Arabe. Las sublevaciones masivas de los ciudadanos en Túnez, Egipto, Libia y Yemen del Sur, entre otros, alteraron sustancialmente el inmovilismo histórico que excluía totalmente a las grandes mayorías de la toma de decisiones. Se está desarrollando ahora en Siria otro capítulo de estos históricos cambios. La férrea dictadura ya ha masacrado sin piedad alguna a más de 5000 ciudadanos, pero la exigencia de democratización asciende y se ha convertido en una causa universal. La Asamblea General de la ONU termina de condenar al régimen y exigir la renuncia de Assad en los más duros términos, por una votación abrumadora de 112 países contra 12" ["It seemed impossible until recently consolidated dictatorships for over 40 years, as many in the Arab world, could be questioned and people could access democratic rights.
