Abstract
"A morte cerebral, em diversos países do mundo, se tornou, em decorrência da consolidação da técnica de transplante, principalmente de coração e de outros órgãos vitais, o critério de estabelecimento da morte. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi verificar se a morte cerebral pode ser considerada o critério que determina a morte. A partir da constatação de diferentes posições em meio à comunidade científica em relação ao tema, foram analisadas posições de médicos e filósofos que argumentam a favor e contra o fato de a morte cerebral ser considerada morte, assim como diversas legislações. Apesar de o assunto estar sendo discutido há décadas e esse critério de morte ter sido adotado em muitas partes do mundo, a questão continua aberta, sem uma conclusão definitiva" ["Brain death has become the criterion to establish death in many countries due to the consolidation of transplant techniques, mainly heart and other vital organs. The aim of this study was to verify if brain death can be considered the only determinant criterion for death. Considering the different positions among the scientific community regarding the issue, an analysis was done about some positions of physicians and philosophers who argue for and against brain death to be considered death, as well as about the various legislations on the theme. This issue remains unresolved, without a definitive conclusion even though the topic has been discussed for decades and this criterion for death has been adopted in many parts of the world"]
